‘Economic Development is about realising potential in all its forms’ says Economy Director General
Gregor Irwin, Director General for Economy at the Scottish Government, joined EDAS Chair Neil McInroy to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing Scotland’s economic development.
In the latest episode of the Talking EDAS podcast, Mr Irwin shared insights into his career path and vision for economic development – as well as the significant challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
As a seasoned economist, with wide-ranging experience across academia, central government and the private sector, Gregor emphasised the unique opportunity Scotland has in harnessing its natural assets to drive forward the net zero transition.
He said: “Scotland’s incredible natural assets, particularly in renewable energy, present unparalleled opportunities for economic growth and sustainability. From offshore wind to green hydrogen production, we are arguably uniquely positioned to lead in clean energy and clean industry.”
Reflecting on his first year-and-a-half in his role, Gregor highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Scottish Government and various sectors, including local communities, businesses, and educational institutions. He expressed a strong belief that true economic development is about creating an environment where people and places can flourish.
“It’s about realising potential in all its forms,” he said, adding that Government partnerships at all levels are critical to unlocking that potential.
Gregor also acknowledged the significant headwinds the Scottish Government is facing, notably fiscal challenges, telling our podcast: “The fiscal position is tight, and hard choices are required. But we must continue to innovate and think differently to overcome these challenges. With constraint comes opportunity.”
The conversation comes as the Scottish Government published its Green Industrial Strategy which identifies the areas of strength and opportunity for Scotland to grow globally competitive industries in the transition to net zero.
“We need to create an environment where people feel empowered to take advantage of opportunities, whether it’s through clean energy projects or local enterprise development,” Mr Irwin added.
